Feast of the Queen of Heaven

May 30 is celebrated as the Feast of the Queen of Heaven. Queen of Heaven, lovely goddess of May, fully grown and gloriously enthroned in pagan and Christian times. May honors the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is the modern-day Queen of Heaven, though somewhat demoted in status from her original divinity.

Have you noticed that it was always Mary who caused the miracles, who appeared to children - as at Lourdes and Fatima? the Queen of Heaven is a hard-working woman, and we light white candles to her....

Ritual For Mother Cotton

In India a ritual was held when the the cotton boles (pods) ripen and burst. When this change in the plant occurs, it was the custom to select the largest plant in the field and having sprinkled it with buttermilk and rice water, to bind it all over with pieces of cotton taken from other plants in the field.

The selected plant is called "Mother Cotton"  and after salutations are made to it, prayers are offered that the other plants....

The Ambarvalia

May 29 is the date given for the Roman festival of Ambarvalia, or the Corn Mother Festival. The Goddess Ceres, the food giver, now has her corn festival, which was the cause of a great deal of festivity. At these festivals they sacrificed a bull, a sow, and a sheep, which, before the sacrifice, were led in procession thrice around the fields. It is from this practice that the name Ambarvalia comes Ambio meaning I go round and Arvum meaning field....

Memorial Day in Ancient Rome

On 10 May, and again on 31 May, the Roman legions at Duro Europa celebrated the Rosalia. This again connects the flowers of Spring with rituals for the dead, only this time the rituals were performed by military units for their fallen comrades rather than for family members. We learn of this celebration first with a military calendar from Syria.

We do not know if the Rosalia was celebrated on the same dates by other legions throughout the Roman Empire, but we hear descriptions of the Rosalia in other texts suggesting that the Rosalia was common in the Roman army....

Invocation To Mother Gaia

This spell is best performed outside in nature, in a secluded private place free from interruption. It can also be done indoors if an outdoor area is not possible. You will need your ritual items and/or items to represent the four elements, a crystal, and also some food and wine.

Cleanse your self and space before you begin the ritual. This could include a ritual bath, smudging, or any other method of cleansing that is comfortable for you.

Stand facing east and say:

''I call to the forces of air to watch over my rite and to offer assistance and protection and to protect me from harm...

Three Mothers Tarot Divination

The Three Mothers (Maiden, Mother, Crone) are not just symbols of the cycles of growth upon the Earth, they also represent phases we physically go through, cycles of events within our lives.

Sometimes we are uncertain as to where we actually are in a cycle of events. This can be frustrating and depressing. We may have to endure until the completion of the cycle, but it's comforting to have some idea of where you are in that cycle. If you are observant, wise enough to seek guidance, and willing to make changes, however painful, you can often shorten the cycle.

This divination ritual (which uses tarot cards) is best done during the waxing or Full Moon, but in a pinch can be performed any time...

Honoring the Three Mothers

The Three Mothers, or Triple Goddess, were known around the world. The Triple Goddess represented the three stages of human life: youth and puberty, parenthood and maturity, old age and wisdom; or body, mind, and spirit. This triad symbolizes the three phases of the Moon: Crescent, Full, and Dark. The goddesses were most often known by the titles of Maid, Mother, and Crone. The ancient Mystery schools, which were originally centers of Goddess knowledge, had three main steps or  degrees....

Powerful Egyptian Healing Chant

The ancient Egyptians used this powerful meditation to infuse their bodies with light. Each body part was dedicated to a divinity who directed the flow of life energy. This meditation may be recited upon waking while standing in an eastern window facing the sun, or before sleeping while lying in repose. After deep relaxation, begin naming the parts of your body that you dedicate to the Divine:

My head is the head of Seshat,
filling with thoughts of the power of the Divine, remembering my soul's purpose.

My face is the face of Nefertum,
the golden child arising above chaos in beauty....

Visit the Crystal Fountain

The Crystal Fountain is a place of peace and tranquility, you can visit whenever you feel stressed or tired. Here you can ask a question and seek the answer in the waters.

Lie down comfortably, with your arms by your sides and your legs uncrossed, close your eyes and take several deep breaths. Visualize yourself walking through the woods on a Summer's evening. Simple Purification Ritual

What follows is a simple purification ritual that can be used on crystals and stones, and other sacred objects. This rite is best done at sunrise or during the day, on your altar (if you have one) or on any table that can be used for this purpose.

Fill a basin with pure water and place this to the west on the table or altar. Next, light a red candle and set this to the south. Light some incense and place this to the east. Finally, place a dish or flowerpot filled with freshly dug earth to the north on the altar. In between all these objects, set the stone (or stones) to be purified....

Spiritual Spring Cleaning

From May 19-28 is the time of the Greek festival of Kallyntaria and Plynteria, a time that is also known as a time for "spring cleaning". Most of us have already started our spring cleaning in various forms, but this particular time of the Sacred Year is dedicated to spiritual cleaning - the cleaning and nurturance of the sacred places.

The Greeks were good at that, and they called this festival Kallyntaria and Plynteria, by which they meant making a special effort to clean the sacred statues of the goddess and god. With all that incense burning and dust gathering, the sacred images get pretty dirty...

The Banishing Ritual

One of the most basic and useful ceremonial rituals of magick is called the *banishing ritual*, or lesser ritual of the pentagram. A pentagram (or pentacle) is a five-pointed star with the point up. The banishing ritual is helpful in psychic protection and healing since it forms a protective barrier against malevolent forces. The psychic barrier it creates can be made to permit entry of desired (constructive) forces and the exclusion of negative ones. Thus, the banishing ritual is an essential first step in almost any formal full magick ceremony....

Psychic Healing

Apollo's Grain Oracle

Although he is most famous as the solar-affiliated lord of medicine, music and prophesy, in the guise of his familiar, a mouse, Apollo also guards grain. Through this venue, he provides another oracle. Once upon a time, this system of divination, known as "aleuromancy," was available if one made a donation at Apollo's shrine. This ancestor of the fortune cookie, is easily reproduced at home.

Whether this oracle tastes good or is even completely baked depends entirely on whether you plan to eat the oracle once its answer is received....

Apollo Love Spell

Apollo is a spirit of omnivorous sexuality. His romantic desires for men and women are equally strong; what seems to be the bottom line of attraction for him is beauty, intelligence, and talent, rather than gender. His is a complex myth. Classical Greek mythology paints him as the handsomest, most talented, most clever spirit of all, yet the women he pursues inevitably run from his embrace. Apollo had better luck with male lovers, with whom he had happy, successful relationships. Request his assistance, especially with someone who's hard to get.

Here's how:

Carve and dress a large yellow or gold candle...

Happy Birthday Apollo!

According to some pagan calendars, May 14 is listed as the Birthday of Apollo. However, according to the mythology, Apollo was born on the seventh day of the month Thargelion. Wikipedia goes on to say that this was according to Delian tradition, and that according to Delphian tradition, it was the seventh day of the month of Bysios. The seventh and twentieth, the days of the new and full moon, were also held sacred to him.

If the exact date is important you you, I'd suggest you take a look at the Wikipedia article on the Attic Calendar which gives the names of the months and their approximate times in the year....

Ice Saint Toxic People Banishing Spell

In southern Germany, the eisbeilige - the iceman days - is the brief cooling trend in May. The "ice saints," Mamertius, Pancratius, and Servatus, were celebrated on May 11. Along with Cold Sophie, these "strong lords" are pagan figures who were turned into Christian saints were said to bring cold weather during planting season. They'd kill a budding tree or a field of sprouting wheat the minute they touched it with their frosty fingers or blew on it with their freezing breath. Farmers learned early on not to set plants out until after the ice saints had come and gone.

Sometimes we find ice saints in our lives, people whose presence chills our blood and infects our happiness with frostbite......  They're toxic people. We need to get them out of our lives......

Cold Sophie

May 15 is the feast day of Saint Sophia of Rome. On this date, Saint Sophia was regularly invoked against frosts that occurred late in the year; thus she was called kalte Sophie 'cold Sophia' in Germany by those who requested her aid in planting arable crops. Considered to be one of the "Ice Saints". Sophia is also an "ice saint" in Slovenia and Central Europe, where St. Sophia's day ("Cold Sophie") is considered the last day of cold weather. There, Sophia is associated with rain and is nicknamed poscana Zofka 'pissing Sophie' or mokra Zofija 'wet Sophia' in folk tradition. In Czech, the Sophia is known as "Žofie, ledová žena" (Sophia, the ice-woman).

Many of the old weather rules are now forgotten. Nowadays, we rely on the weather forecasts of radio and television. According to lore...

Mother Goose Magick

Old Mother Goose, when
She wanted to wander,
Would ride through the air
On a very fine gander.

Today, Mother Goose is limited to the nursery, her rhymes intended to entertain only the youngest, least sophisticated children, yet Mother Goose's namesake bird links her to a host of powerful spirits: Aphrodite, too, rides through the air on a goose. The bird is sacred to Egyptian Hathor and Roman Juno, both valiant protectors and advocates for women....

... One thing is certain... if "she" were one individual, she was passing down oral history, lore and adages... from people of other eras. In the early days, before they were "collected" into the somewhat familiar form of today; these rhymes were actually methods of preserving history, customs, lore and fears for the common man....

Here is a short grimoire of Mother Goose spells, charms, chants, and divinations, taken from the 1916 edition of "The Real Mother Goose."

Spells for the Solar Eclipse

On May 10th 2013 there will be a solar eclipse. It will only be visible from northern Australia and the Pacific. The moon will obscure 95% of the sun's disk. Here is a list of spells to harness the energy of the solar eclipse:

Contact the Faeries Eclipse Spell

An eclipse can be an excellent time to make contact with the Faerie realm. Here is a great how-to that I found at Ancient Magical Recipes:

To initiate contact with the Faeries during the eclipse go out in a place which feels familiar and alive. Revenants – The Unquiet Dead

A revenant is an animated corpse typically possessed by a spirit that was believed to return from the grave to terrorize the living. The word "revenant" is derived from the Latin word, revenans, "returning" (see also the related French verb "revenir", meaning "to come back").

Vivid stories of revenants arose in Western Europe (especially Great Britain, and were later carried by Anglo-Norman invaders to Ireland) during the High Middle Ages.,,,

Many modern people still make the trip to the cemetery during the Memorial Day weekend for the purpose of putting flowers on graves, a way of acknowledging and remembering deceased family members.

A Magickal Employment Lamp

The type of lamp recommended is a hurricane or kerosene lamp. The basic fuel mixture is a blend of castor oil, olive oil, and kerosene. Use 2/3 kerosene to 1/3 oil mixture. A simple terracotta oil lamp may also be used - the basic fuel mixture would then be olive oil, or palm oil.

Start with a clean lamp - a new one is best - but a used one is fine as long as it has been thoroughly cleansed.

At the bottom of the lamp place a magnet, a personal object or picture of yourself, and something connected with the type of work you're seeking - this can be the name of a specific company, their logo, a small item representing the type of work, or you can simply write what kind of work you want on a small piece of parchement and include that. Add a teaspoon of molasses. Pour in two ounces of virgin olive oil that has been thoroughly infused with two tablespoons of the following mixture:

Equal parts lovage root and grated lemon peel

Now select four of the herbs from the following list and add 1/2 teaspoon of each:

Cinnamon - Yellow Dock - Squill Root - High John the Conqueror - Red Clover - Irish Moss - Five-finger Grass - Tonka Bean - Sweet Flag - Buckeye - Wheat - Coffee - Sesame Seeds - Fenugreek - Tobacco - Jezebelle Root

Fill the rest of the way with your basic fuel mixture. Light the lamp and recite a prayer to Saint Joseph, or whatever deity you wish to invoke for help with employment and/or steady rewarding work.

Once it is lit, the flame must not be extinguished until the goal is accomplished. Each day at the same time, your desire should be restated and the prayer recited while turning the lamp in a clockwise direction (to get the ingredients moving), and the lamp should be refueled if necessary.

Note: If some of the ingredients seem difficult to acquire, feel free to use any herbs and oils that are useful in spells for employment. For example, coffee can be substituted for lovage root.

Magickal Lamp Divination

Lampadomancy is the ancient art of divining via a lamp. Magick lamps may be crafted from brass or stone, however the most common traditional lamp is formed from earth, terracotta. The oracle is determined by the appearance and duration of the flame. Lampadomancy was once a very common form of divination, dating back to the days of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Because candles were once rare and expensive, magick lamps were more commonly used.

Magick lamps haven't changed much, basically consisting of a terracotta dish filled with oil, the sides proportionately high so that oil and flames are contained. A coiled linen strip resting in the oil and hanging over the edge creates a wick. Similar lamps, reproductions as well as ancient artifacts, are available through antiquarians, but this is a very simple, even child-like design, easily crafted or improvised. A quick google search will show that hand made oil lamps can be created with bottles, tea pots, and a variety other containers....

A Dramatic Infertility Solution

Among the most famous miracle-working rabbis was Judah the Pious (1150-1217), author of the influential Book of Angels. Although many other rabbis are credited with miracle cures, usually their methods aren't revealed - just vague tales of prayer and ritual. A legend, however, explicitly explains how Judah the Pious effected a cure and why it worked. Adapt to your own situation.

In the story, a woman who had previously borne children, now older (old enough to perform the ritual for their mother), wished to have another child but found herself unable to do so. She petitioned Judah the Pious for help.

His prescription? He had her children dig a grave for her and place her within it and pretend to mourn for her. Unknown to the woman...

May - Magickal History
